Compression Garments: Helpful Tips
A few simple tips can help keep your compression stockings and arm sleeves comfortable, effective, and in good condition.
For All Compression Garments
- Ensure the right fit. Your garment should feel comfortably snug and supportive. If it regularly slips, rolls, bunches, or feels uncomfortably tight, you may need to be re-measured.
- Keep it smooth. Check for wrinkles, folds, or bunching, and gently smooth the garment into place.
- Don't roll the edges. Rolling or folding the top of a stocking or sleeve can create uncomfortable pressure.
- Handle with care. Keep fingernails smooth, remove jewellery that could snag the fabric, and consider using donning gloves when applying your garment.
- Have a spare if possible. Having two garments makes it easier to maintain your compression routine while one is being washed.
Tips for Compression Stockings
- For many people, stockings are easiest to put on earlier in the day, before swelling increases.
- Make sure the heel is correctly positioned before working the stocking up your leg.
- Avoid pulling the stocking up by the top band. Instead, gradually work the fabric into place.
- Check throughout the day that your stocking hasn't slipped, bunched, or rolled.

Tips for Compression Arm Sleeves
- Apply your sleeve to clean, completely dry skin. If you use moisturizer, allow it to absorb fully first.
- Make sure the sleeve sits smoothly and evenly along your arm without wrinkles or folds.
- Avoid rolling down the top of the sleeve if it begins to move. Gently reposition it instead.
- If your sleeve regularly slips, rolls, or feels uncomfortable, it may be time to have your fit checked.
