I've Healed from Surgery, Now What?
Getting through surgery and those first few weeks of recovery is a big accomplishment. Once your incisions have healed and your body is ready, you can begin thinking about what comes next, including finding the right bras, being fit for a breast prosthesis, and support for your changing body.
After a Mastectomy
The initial healing period after a mastectomy is generally 4–6 weeks, although everyone heals at their own pace. Once your surgeon has cleared you and you feel ready to wear a bra again, this is often the time to schedule your first fitting for a breast prosthesis and surgical mastectomy bras.
Waiting until you have healed allows time for:
- Swelling to decrease
- Incisions to heal
- Your chest to become less tender and sensitive
- Your body to adjust to the changes from surgery
- You to become comfortable with having weight against your chest again
- You to feel ready to wear a bra again
At your appointment, we’ll take the time to find the right breast prosthesis and bra for your body, your lifestyle, and your comfort. You’ll be able to try different options and see what feels right for you.

Need Help With the Cost?
Before your appointment, we encourage you to check your insurance coverage, if applicable, so you know what is available to you. We can also provide an estimate letter that you can submit to your insurance company if you would like to confirm your coverage ahead of time.
If you don’t have private insurance, there may still be government assistance, tax benefits, or other financial support available to you.

After Breast Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction has a longer initial recovery period, generally around 6–8 weeks, although your recovery will depend on the type of reconstruction you have had and your surgeon’s instructions.
Once you are ready, you can return to us for bras specifically designed wear after breast surgery.
These bras are designed with your comfort and healing in mind. They offer:
- Soft, skin-friendly fabrics that are gentle on sensitive skin
- Support without digging into your body
- No underwire that can put pressure against healing tissue
- Construction designed to avoid common surgical incision areas
- Comfortable, supportive cups that accommodate your changing shape
- Gentle support while allowing your body to continue healing
Your reconstructed breasts may continue to change as swelling decreases and your body settles. This is completely normal, and your bra needs may change along with you. We can help you find comfortable options at each stage.
Your Coverage Doesn’t End With Surgery
If you have insurance coverage for surgical bras, reconstruction does not mean you lose that benefit. Your insurance likely will continue to cover the bras you need after your initial recovery.
If you do not have insurance coverage, your receipts may also be useful when determining whether you qualify to claim eligible medical expenses on your income tax return.
