How to Measure Stockings

Getting the Right Fit

Proper measurement is an important first step when choosing a compression garment. Compression garments need to fit correctly to provide the intended level of compression without creating unnecessary pressure, slipping, bunching, or discomfort.

During your appointment, we will measure against your bare leg. For this reason, we recommend wearing a loose garment on your lower half or bringing shorts to change into. Measurements are taken at specific points on the legs (and hips and waist for thigh high or pantyhose stockings).

Medical grade compression stockings require a doctor's prescription that indicates both the compression level and diagnosis. If you have private insurance, your insurance company will also require an up-to-date prescription. Please bring this prescription with you to your appointment with us.

To track your swelling over time, it is recommend that you measure yourself each morning at the same time.

Helpful Measuring Tips

  • When measuring yourself, measure first thing in the morning when swelling is at its least
  • Use a flexible measuring tape
  • Measure on bare skin rather than over clothing
  • Keep the measuring tape snug and level without pulling it tightly into the skin
  • Record your measurements in centimetres, not inches
  • If possible, have someone help you measure for greater accuracy
